Dan Walters returns to Cougar Country for his second season with the women’s basketball program. He was part of the historical turnaround of the program that saw the team win a state playoff game and ranked #6 nationally in the WBCA with the highest team gpa.
Walters is a native of Taft where he attended and played three sports during his time at Taft Union high school. Upon graduating in 1991, he enrolled at San Diego State University where he worked in Media Relations for the Athletics Department. Walters was responsible for the media guide for the football program and in charge of the men’s volleyball program. Coach Walters also worked for two seasons with the nationally ranked women’s basketball team.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in physical education, Walters returned to Kern County where he coached Boys Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball at his alma mater while taking classes at California State University, Bakersfield for a teaching Credential. For the past twenty-seven years, Walters has worked in the Kern High School District where he has taught Physical Education, Biology, Health, Special Education at three high schools while getting his master’s degree in special education. Walters coached football and boys basketball at North High School from 1998 to 2010. Before coaching at Taft College, Walters coached boys basketball for the last twelve years at Bakersfield High School. At BHS, the boy’s team won eight league championships and made the valley division one championship game in 2017. Multiple players from Bakersfield High School went on to play in college with three players playing professionally in the NBA and overseas.
Coach Walters was recently announced as the Head Men’s Golf coach for Cougar Nation.
