
APTOS --- Facing a doubleheader sweep, Taft College rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Cabrillo College by a final score of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon. The victory capped a two-day, four-game trip to open the 2022 season for the Cougars.
Taft totaled nine hits in the win, getting an impressive effort at the plate from Alicia Pompa. She went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Arianna Forthman (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Kaylee Beltran (2 for 4, 2B) both had tow hits.
Alexis Garay went the distance for the Cougars. She allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out six.
Earlier in the day, TC suffered a 4-3 loss to the Cabrillo. The Seahawks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and the walk-off winner in the seventh to steal the win.
Taft banged out 10 hits, including four from Forthman (3 for 4). Pompa went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI, Garay was 2 for 3 with 2 runs, while Hailee Danneker also went 2 for 4.
Emma Silva allowed two earned runs and six hits over six innings. Garay took the loss, allowing the final run in the seventh.
The Cougars had a tougher time on opening day on Friday at West Valley College in Saratoga. Taft lost 9-1 in five innings to open the doubleheader and lost 8-0 in six innings to close out the day's action.
Taft, now 1-3, returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 3) when the Cougars travel to Santa Barbara City College for a doubleheader.
