Sophomore Greyson Barrett smashed a home run and drove in two runs but Taft College couldn't hold a narrow one-run lead and suffered a 6-3 loss at Allan Hancock on Monday.
The Cougars were up 3-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before the host Bulldogs rallied for four runs. Allan Hancock totaled three hits, walked twice, and took advantage of a pair of Taft errors to score all four runs with two outs in the frame.
Taft got off to a good start in the contest, as Barrett gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with his sacrifice fly in the top of the first that scored Damien Holmes.
Allan Hancock took the lead in the third, getting a pair of runs off starter Michael Selleck. In the sixth, Barrett's solo home run tied up the game before Holmes' RBI double in the seventh drove in Jose Rivera with the go-ahead run.
But Taft reliever Ryan Brown couldn't make it out of the eighth. He took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs and 2 hits in 2/3 innings. Julian DeLeon recorded the final out of the inning but the damage was done.
Selleck went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs and 6 hits. He struck out six but walked five.
Taft, now 1-9 overall, returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 13) when it hosts Antelope Valley College in a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
