Dynamic Duo from Colorado Commit to TC Cougars’ Basketball
TAFT, CA – Taft College Women's Basketball is on the verge of producing an upcoming stellar recruiting class for the 2024-2025 season. It just got even deeper with the latest commitments from two talented individuals stemming from the State of Colorado. Madyn Kassatly and Ella Waufle of Horizon High School have decided to play for Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. and the Taft College Lady Cougars. Both women will be arriving as incoming freshmen, joining five returners, one transfer, and six other freshmen so far.
Horizon High School, located in Thornton, Colorado, competes in the highest division in the state—6A. They made the state playoffs the last three years, winning the league championship, and appearing in the elite 8 of the state finals. The Horizon High School Hawks ended this past season with an overall record of 25-3.
Kassatly played three years at the varsity level, starting her junior and senior years averaging 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game. She was voted Second Team All-Conference in her junior year and Honorable Mention in her senior year. The 5'8" guard/forward also played one season for the highly regarded AAU BC Denver organization under the guidance of Coach Gabriela Jimenez.
Kassatly commented, "I chose Taft College because of the connection I had with Coach Romeo. I believe he will push me as a player and push me to be the best version of myself on and off the court."
As for Waufle, she played three years as well, started her senior year, and shot 32% from the field, averaging 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. She was voted Honorable Mention in league and Most Improved her senior year. Waufle also played flag football.
Waufle expressed her remarks, "I felt like Coach Romeo was really invested in his players and this program. I believe he is going to push me to be my best and help me get to the next level. I also love how competitive the California teams are. I always love good competition."
Coach Lagmay shared his comments as well, "Both Madyn and Ella are huge assets for the Taft College Women's Basketball program. They contribute heavily to different aspects of the game. Both are fierce competitors and play the game like true ballers. Madyn will be physical, have a knack to grab rebounds, be able to score mid-range, and get to the basket with ease. She can also play multiple positions, and that makes her so versatile in any strategic attack on both ends of the court. Ella is going to cause havoc on the defensive end making it really difficult for opposing guards. She's truly a pest on defense. I expect her to foul, but also stop any guard from doing any damage to us offensively."
