TAFT, CA – Taft College Softball is looking forward to the upcoming 2025 season. Last season was a bit of a challenge for the Cougars as they had to overcome many obstacles in coming back from a season in which the team didn't compete. The players worked hard last season, and many of the starters returned to being a part of the building of a new era.
This year they welcome back five sophomores and added someone new to the sophomore class. Laie Keahi who was first team all utility last season is back as the Cougars consistent bat and glove behind the plate. She is joined by two great gloves and honorable conference mentions Isabella Navarro and Echo Pallesen. Isabella Carson is eager to prove herself and is off to a great start after some injuries that she pushed through last season. Hanna Hendricks who has shown to be a clutch hitter has also returned to put a stamp on her sophomore season. Also added is Audrey Ortiz who provides depth for the pitching rotation and positive energy for the team.
The freshman makes the bulk of the lineup as they welcome four Taft City locals, one player from Canada, Washington, Hawaii, Northern and Southern California. The freshman class comes in with a lot of skills: Jada Mizener and Ava Heitman leading the Cougars from the mound, Cadence Mizener a force at the plate and an amazing glove at short. Mischa Mott provides the power for the Cougars as she hit three homeruns within the first three contests. Hadlie Wilson provides range and leadership in the outfield alongside our very athletic utility player Julia Gutierrez. Ainsley Webber assists behind the plate and works hard in every position she is placed in. Taina Luhia provides huge pop at the plate and brings the noise and competitive drive this team feeds off.
Taft College Softball Head Coach Amanda Clark expressed her positive outlook," We are really excited for this season. We have some young talent and depth this year. We have six returning sophomores who have such positive energy and fight. They have grown so much over the last year and have the drive and work ethic to keep pushing. They know what it is like to play through adversity and are eager to have a successful season. Our freshman class definitely has talent. They have had successful senior seasons and are looking to make their stamp at Taft College. We are looking to build a culture and with the group we have, they can make a statement. We are hoping to build from last year and keep growing, competing every game."
Taft will play their next set of home games on February 18 against Cerro Coso College at 1:00pm and February 20 against Shasta College at 11:00am and 1:00pm.
