Taft College freshman Sam Washburn scored a career-high 42 points, unfortunately the rest of the Cougars totaled just eight points, in a 97-50 loss at No. 18 state-ranked College of the Sequoias in both teams' Central Valley Conference opener on Wednesday.
Washburn made 14 of 35 shots from the field, including 8 for 19 from three-point range, and converted 6 of 8 free throws on her way to 42 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and had a pair of steals.
Maysan Raleigh scored the Cougars' other eight points in the contest, shooting 4 for 14 for the game. Raleigh also posted 4 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Sequoias (12-5, 1-0 CVC) jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Washburn made the first of her three-pointers with seven minutes to go in the first quarter. The Cougars trailed 27-10 after the opening period and were down 53-15 at halftime.
The loss dropped Taft to 2-14 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Cougars will look to snap a four-game losing streak when they return to CVC action on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 3 p.m. on the road at Reedley College.
