Cougars open conference play with 2-1 win over Reedley

Sophomore Vanessa Aguero scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the Taft College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Reedley College in both teams' Central Valley Conference opener on Tuesday.

The victory improved the Cougars to 6-4-2 overall and 1-0 in the CVC. Taft is heating up at the right time, having won four of its last five games.

A pair of first-half goals proved to be enough for the Taft to hang on for the win. Aguero fed Justice Rodriguez for the Cougars' first goal in the 24th minute before Aguero scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 36th minute off the assist from Hilary Barragan.

Taft took that 2-0 lead into halftime and held it all the way until the 65th minute. Sabrina Cabrera scored for Reedley to cut the lead in half. But Cougar goalkeeper Vanessa Casas and the defense held tough the rest of the contest.

Casas made six saves in goal for the win. Taft went on to outshoot Reedley by a 20-11 margin.

The Cougars will look to extend their two-game winning streak on Friday (Oct. 18) when they host West Hills College Lemoore in a 1 p.m. CVC match.
