Cougars swept in CVC doubleheader by Reedley

Taft College couldn't get much going offensively against Central Valley Conference-leading Reedley College and suffered a pair of five-inning losses on Tuesday in Reedley. The Cougars suffered a 13-2 loss in the opening game of the doubleheader and went down by a final score of 9-1 in Game 2.

Reedley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first before Taft scored its lone runs in the top of the second. Jacqueline Perez ripped a double to score Isabelle Martinez. Perez advanced to third base on the throw to the plate, which proved beneficial. One batter later, Maddie Flippin's grounder to shortstop allowed Perez to come in for Taft's second run.

But that was all for the Cougars at the plate. Seven Taft errors led to eight unearned runs by the Tigers. Gillian Hale suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs (2 earned) and 9 hits over 2 innings.

Reedley once again got out in front early in the second game, putting up 5 runs in the bottom of the first off Taft starting pitcher Abrianna Carr. Seven more Cougar errors allowed four Reedley runs to score. Carr allowed 6 runs (2 earned) and 7 hits over 3 innings.

Taft had just two hits in the contest and scored its only run in the top of the fourth after a pair of walks and a Reedley error loaded the bases. A wild pitch by Tigers' pitcher Amanda Beltran allowed Hale to score. The Cougars had runners on second and third with one out but could not get the clutch hit.

Taft fell to 1-16 overall and 0-5 in Central Valley Conference play while Reedley moved to 12-12 and 5-1. The Cougars return to action on Thursday (Mar. 12) when they travel to College of the Sequoias for a 2 p.m. CVC game.
