Cougars drop doubleheader to Bakersfield

After combining for 29 runs a doubleheader sweep of Gavilan College last week, the Taft College bats were cooled down in a pair of losses to Bakersfield College on Tuesday. The Cougars dropped the opener 9-0 in six innings and fell in the second game by a score of 11-2 in five.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Taft but was moved to Bakersfield because of better playing conditions following bad weather earlier in the week.

Taft recorded just two hits in the Game 1 loss. Beige Reinhardt hit a single in the third and Jade Martinez singled in the sixth for the Cougars' lone baserunners in the contest.

Abrianna Carr went the distance in the loss, allowing eight earned runs and 15 hits.

Taft finally broke through to score in the bottom of the fourth in Game 2. Unfortunately, the Cougars were already trailing by six runs.

A pair of walks and a ground out put runners on second and third base with one out. Jessica Silva followed with a ground out to drive in Kaitlyn Allen to put Taft on the board.

The Cougars added another their final run in the fifth when Isabelle Martinez hit a RBI single to bring home Morgan Thomas.

Isabelle Martinez took the loss in the circle for Taft. She went all five innings and allowed six earned runs and 11 hits.

Taft, now 5-7 overall, returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 21) when the Cougars travel to Hartnell College in Salinas for a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
