Cougars get ninth shutout in 2-0 win over Santa Ana

Taft College's men's soccer team is on a five-match winning streak the Cougars hope will carry them into the home stretch of the season.

The Cougars got two unassisted goals in the first half Tuesday that guided them to a 2-0 victory over visiting Santa Ana College in non-conference action. It marked the ninth match of the season the TC defense has pitched a shutout.

Leopoldo Hernandez, a freshman midfielder, struck first with a goal in the 20th minute to give the Cougars all the scoring the stingy Cougar defense would need. It was his fourth goal of the season to go with five assists.

Ten minutes later midfielder Marcos Moreno (Centennial High) scored another unassisted goal to give the Cougars a 2-0 halftime lead. It was Moreno's second goal.

It was a good win for Taft. The Dons came into town with an 8-2-3 record. The Cougars improved to 10-4-2. They have won their last five and are 6-0-2 in the last eight.

TC hopes to extend its win streak next Tuesday when they travel to Clovis (1-2 CVC, 3-7-4 overall). That match will finish off the first half of conference play and set the stage for another crucial battle with rival Fresno (2-0-1, 9-1-5) on Halloween afternoon on the Rams home field. The teams played a scoreless tie when they met in Taft on Sept. 29.
