Taft College men's soccer team will host Las Positas College Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first round of the state playoffs.
The Cougars are ready.
"We're very excited," said head coach Angelo Cutrona. "We feel good about our chances."
The Cougars drew the No. 6 seed in the northern California playoffs after finishing second in the Central Valley Conference with a 3-2-3 record, 12-4-5 overall.
Fresno won the conference title with a 6-1-1 mark (16-1-4 overall) and is the No. 1 seed. The Rams' only loss came at the hands of the Cougars.
Las Positas (11-6-5) is No. 11 and finished fourth in the north division of the Coast Conference.
The Cougars rely on a strong defense.
"It's no secret we've had trouble getting the ball into the net this year but I am very confident about our defense," Cutrona said. "After all, all we need is one ore goal than our opponent."
A win Saturday will put the Cougars in the quarterfinals next week against the winner of No. 3 DeAnza vs. No. 14 Contra Costa.
Saturday's match will be played on the soccer field at Tenth and San Emidio streets.
