Solid effort by Riley leads Taft to win at Compton

COMPTON – Starting pitcher Landon Riley tossed 6 2/3 quality innings, limiting Compton College to just one run, in a 5-3 Taft College non-conference victory over the Tartars on Monday.

Riley scattered seven hits while striking out six batters on his way to his first win of the season.

Taft totaled just five hits on offense but took advantage of four Compton errors to score four unearned runs. TC scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, rallied for three in the fifth, and added another in the sixth.

Josh Gaeta smacked an RBI-double in the fourth, Nate Gutierrez hit a run-scoring single, Jackson Berry brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt, and a Compton error allowed a pair of runs to score.

With the win, Taft improved to 11-18 overall. The Cougars are back in action on Thursday (Apr. 6) at 3 p.m. when they begin a two-game series at Sierra College.
