Garza continues hot hitting in loss at Cerro Coso

Sophomore Andres Garza put together another impressive day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double to lead Taft College in a 19-5 loss at Cerro Coso College in Ridgecrest on Wednesday.

Garza reached base in four out of his five trips to the plate, adding a pair of walks. On Monday, he went a perfect 3 for 3 and got on base in all four at bats.

Garza got Wednesday's game started off right for the Cougars. He led off the contest with a single and came in to score on a one-out double by Christian Wilson to give TC an early 1-0 advantage.

But that lead didn't last long. Cerro Coso put up seven runs in the bottom of the second, another in the third, and blew the game open with nine runs in the fourth.

Taft added single runs in four out of five middle innings. Wilson drove in Garza for the second time with an RBI-double in the third, Gavyn Seifert walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in a run, Julian DeLeon hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Justin Francis singled home Wilson in the seventh.

Treven Wachsmuth lasted just 1 2/3 innings in the start for the Cougars. He allowed seven runs and six hits. Alex Hunter pitched well in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts while Seifert threw a scoreless eighth.

Taft fell to 1-10 overall with the loss. The Cougars return to Central Valley Conference action on Saturday (May 1) when they travel to College of the Sequoias for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
