Late innings hurt Taft in loss at COS

A relatively close 5-2 ball game between Taft College and College of the Sequoias got ugly late. COS put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then added four more in the seventh before blowing the game open by scoring nine runs in the eighth to hand the Cougars a 21-2 defeat in Visalia on Wednesday.

The loss wrapped up a two-game series with Sequoias that saw the Giants take both games. TC dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Central Valley Conference action while COS moved to 4-0 overall and in conference play.

Taft trailed early after allowing three runs in the first. The Cougars got a run back in the second after Jackson Van Roekel's RBI single drove in Niko Joven. COS added two more in the second before TC responded with its final run in the third thanks to a Giants' error.

Cougar pitcher Treven Wachsmuth kept COS off the scoreboard over the third, fourth, and fifth innings before running out of gas in the sixth. From that point, it was all Sequoias as the Giants would total 13 runs over the final three innings.

TC managed eight hits, including a pair by Christian Wilson (2 for 4).

Taft will look to snap its winless start when the Cougars return to action on Friday (April 16). TC will host Fresno City College in a conference doubleheader that is set to begin at noon.
