The power surged continued for Taft College on Friday. The Cougars got home runs from Wes Herbert, Andres Rolon, and Jake Pearson on their way to a 13-1 non-conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College in the opening game of a three-game series. The victory improved Taft to 3-5 overall.
The Cougars' three home runs today give them a state-leading 10 for the season, including five over the past two games.
Herbert and Rolon hit back-to-back jacks in the second inning to put Taft up 4-0 and Pearson made it 8-1 with his solo shot in the fifth.
Herbert drove in two runs with a triple in the fourth to go along with his two-run home run to give him 4 RBI on the day. Pearson (2 for 4, 2 R) and Buster Hardman (1 for 3, 3 R) both drove in two runs each.
Cassius Shy (1-2) earned his first win of the season. He was impressive, going six innings while striking out nine LA Harbor batters. He scattered two hits and gave up just one run. Brady Wilson picked up the save, tossing three scoreless innings to close out the ball game.
The series moves to LA Harbor College in Wilmington for Game 2 on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 2 p.m. and closes out back at Taft on Monday (Feb. 18) with first pitch also at 2.
