Former TC coach, academic advisor Tony Thompson to retire

Tony Thompson, former Taft College baseball head coach for 17 seasons as well as academic advisor for 12 years, has announced his retirement from the college. His final day at TC after a 35-year career will be on August 31.

The Taft community is invited to a retirement party in his honor on Friday, June 17. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with golf at Buena Vista GC in Taft followed by a no-host bar at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. at OT Cookhouse and Saloon, located at 205 N. 10th St. in Taft. Thompson began his career at Taft in 1987 and has held numerous positions within the campus and community, including 21 years as a member of the faculty teaching psychology, health education, and physical education activity courses.

"Taft College is the only employer I have ever known as a professional," said Thompson. "In my view, I feel like I've poured my heart and soul into both Taft and Taft College."

Thompson coached the Taft baseball team from 1988-2005 and was inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007. He also served as co-head coach of the women's golf team for one season and was an assistant golf coach for three seasons.

He recently wrapped up a stint as president of the Community College Counselors/Advisors Academic Association for Athletics (3C4A).
