Returning sophomore Krystal Zavala has emerged as a leader on the court for the Taft College women’s basketball team as well as for first-year Cougars head coach Daniel Nelms.

“Krystal has been working hard to get herself ready and prepared for this season,” said Nelms. “She has been asked to play multiple positions on the offensive end and by doing so has helped the team in many ways.”

This spring, Zavala has started all seven games for the Cougars and is averaging 4.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Her 10 steals and 10 assists also lead the squad.

On March 12, Zavala scored a season-high 8 points and had 8 rebounds at Cuesta College.

Originally out of Ridgeview High School, Zavala averaged 8.4 points and 2.9 rebounds during her freshman 2019-20 season.
